New EliteXC Welterweight Champ Openly Lobbies to go to UFC

...at least that's what it sounded like to me. After submitting Nick Thompson with a guillotine choke in the first round of Saturday's fight, Jake Shields was awarded the EliteXC Welterweight Championship. In his post-fight interview with Gus Johnson, Shields said the following:

"I'd love to fight the winner of St. Pierre-Fitch to unify the world titles."

Only problem is, both Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch fight in the UFC and there's no reason for either to leave the Zuffa family in the near future. So the only way for such a fight to realistically happen would be for Shields to jump to the octagon. What a coup that would be for Dana & Co.

One more note - I gotta give some props to Shields' opponent, Nick Thompson. Thompson fought in Stockton, California tonight despite having to fly back to Minneapolis to take the Minnesota Bar Exam on Tuesday. Gearing up to take the California Bar Exam myself this Tuesday (and Wednesday and Thursday), I have no idea how he was able to prepare for both. For his sake, I just hope that he has better luck with the exam than he did with Shields.
